Adhesion of (Hydro)gel Materials to the Surface – Physico-chemical Description and Biological Concequences
Žibeková, Lucia ; Mravec, Filip (referee) ; Kalina, Michal (advisor)
This Bachelor´s thesis deals with study of adhesion of hydrogels materials to the surface. Three biopolymers were selected for this purpose, one of which is psychically cross-linked (agarose) and two are chemically cross-linked (based on sodium alginate cross-linked with Ca2+ and polyvinyl alcohol cross-linked with borax). In the experimental part of the work, adhesion was first examined by a visual method on an inclined plane. The tilt was at different angles (30°, 45°, 90°) where it was observed whether the hydrogel was able to attach to a solid surface or slip down. The agarose was examined in different concentrations from 0.5 wt% to 4 wt% in both methods. Also, the alginate gel was examined at various concentrations with two different cross-linked agent. However, alginate was only used in the visual method because of its inhomogeneity. In contrast, the PVA gel was examined at 10:1 and 4:1 ratios for the both methods. The second method in the experimental part was the tensile test carried out on the Inova apparatus – hydraulic pulsator, and thus the methodology for the study of physical and chemically cross-linked hydrogels was optimized. With increasing concentration of agarose gels, adhesion strength and work increased as well. For PVA gels, the adhesion work was higher, but the adhesive strength remained approximately the same as for the agarose gels.
Hydrogel phantoms for ultrasound diagnostics
Cerevatova, Kristina ; Smilek, Jiří (referee) ; Pekař, Miloslav (advisor)
This bachelor thesis deals with properties and preparation of hydrogel phantoms used in ultrasound diagnostics. The main object of this work was to get acquainted with the production and problems of phantom models. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on phantom characterization, the principle of ultrasound, and phantom manufacturing companies. The practical part focuses on production of phantom models in Dansk Fantom Service, and on own production in the laboratory. Then on these phantoms was studied the speed of ultrasound, attenuation, and other physical changes.
Transport Properties of Thin Films Based on Polyvinylalcohol
Blažková, Dominika ; Smilek, Jiří (referee) ; Kalina, Michal (advisor)
This bachelor thesis deals with the optimization of the preparation of hydrogel thin films based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The first step was to optimize the preparation of films. PVA, with a molecular weight of 130 kDa, was used for the preparation of films and 10 wt.% solutions in ultrapure water were prepared from it. The heating duration time of the solution was set at 1.5 h at 90 °C. This was followed by drying at 50 °C for 24 h. Subsequently, PVA films were also prepared from solutions of methylene blue in water and from solutions of methylene blue in an aqueous NaCl solution. The prepared films were subsequently characterized by measuring their thickness, swelling ability, specific surface area and diffusion properties. The morphology of the PVA films was also visualized by SEM microscopy. All prepared films were smooth and had a very small specific surface area. The transport properties were monitored by the method of release into solution and Methylene blue was used as a probe. Release into 5, 10 and 20 ml of ultrapure water was observed. The results obtained show that the most methylene blue was released into the solution with the greatest volume and the release of methylene blue from the PVA film takes place freely without significant interaction with the matrix of the PVA film.
Disposable pH sensor
Dvořáčková, Sabina ; Kovalčík, Adriána (referee) ; Veselá, Mária (advisor)
This bachelor thesis deals with thin polymer layers containing substances capable of reacting to changes in the pH. In theory are processed informations of smart packaging including legislation of general food packaging. Natural substances forming the basis for the production of edible films are also described. An indicator of ammonia in composition of PVA and red cabbage anthocyanins was studied here. The prepared layers were tested for gaseous NH3. Layers containing anthocyanins responded with a very intense color transition from purple and blue to turquoise.

Verification of the use of pva based nanofiber textiles as a rehabilitation for the structures attack by wood decaying fungi
Rácová, Z. ; Ryparová, Pavla ; Wasserbauer, R. ; Nežerka, V. ; Tesárek, Pavel ; Demo, Pavel
The presented paper is focused on the investigation of antifungal properties of nanofiber PVA-based textiles with incorporated copper and silver ions. In particular, the ability to prevent the growth of Dry rot fungus (Serpula lacrymans) was studied in laboratory conditions. For that purpose, the Petri dishes with malt agar were inoculated with square cut-outs of seed stocks, consequently covered by the nanofiber textiles and kept in an incubator at 28 degrees C. The fungal growth had been monitored and recorded at regular intervals for 28 days. The comparison of the individual treatments (PVA, PVA + Ag, PVA + Cu, PVA + Ag + Cu) is finally discussed.\n
